Ireland - Saturday 6/3 - Part 1
The day started with a delicious breakfast and the gorgeous view of the Doolin Valley. We were tempted to stay another day but the rest of Ireland called us like the sirens song from the sea. (I can tell staying in the Samuel Beckett room is rubbing off on Mike).
We said goodbye to Doolin and headed to The Burren (said like Bern or Byrne). We started with a tour of another ring fort but this one had a really delightful and funny guide. He told us about the different stone walls are built and it was actually fascinating.
This fort was 3000 years old and was in use much later than most.
There is an archaeological training dig here too so they’ve uncovered a ton of interesting stuff.
Next we visited this burial Temple from 5000 years ago.
This area also showed off how different the Burren is from other parts of Ireland. The glaciers went through here 10,000 years ago - Leaving behind enormous rocks with fossils in them.
Next we visited Dunguaire Castle - Inhabited for many years by the mayor of Galway who really liked having people over. They still host those kinda cheesy medieval feasts here in honor of him.
After lunch we headed to Trim but not without a detour to visit Ireland’s oldest pub (established 900 AD). Currently named Sean’s Bar.
There was a wedding party out front getting photos taken - Everyone holding pints of Guinness.

Hehehe...he said "trim"
ReplyDeleteMy boss and I met at Steins on Clement yesterday. The bar maid there is from the islands off Gallway as is his fam! How random right!? Big blue marble we spin on
ReplyDeleteIrelands oldest bar is called Seans? Really? Not Irish Goodbye or even Seamus O'Tooles? Lucky Limerick? Lass' & Bass' (Bass is British - but I like where it's going?)
